The kingdom of Selvyn has been frozen in wintertime since the mystic Anguis snatched the throne by marrying Queen Aeliana. Under his rigid control, magical creatures are banned from the kingdom, and anyone caught associating with one is either imprisoned or killed. Anguis blames both magic and the former king for inciting the gods' wrath and bringing the endless winter to Selvyn, and assures his people that he alone, who is capable of conversing with the seven gods, can restore Selvyn. But when rumors surface that the land will only return to its former prosperous and luscious landscape when the rightful heir ascends to the throne, all eyes turn to Queen Aeliana's oldest son, Arthfael, to save Selvyn from destruction.
Yet a fortnight before Arthfael comes of age, he disappears without a trace, and hope is once again lost. It is only Arthfael's younger brother, Evander, who believes that his brother will return to save the kingdom. When Evander is visited by three sprites, they convince him to make a deal with a fallen god known as The Strangler who promises to show him where Arthfael is in return for the completion of three tasks. But Evander soon realizes that The Strangler's Quest is a death sentence, and if he completes the tasks, Anguis will kill him. Yet if he doesn't complete them, The Strangler will do worse.
